About EAOP

The Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP) was established in 1976 by the University of California (UC) to increase the number of students from underserved schools and communities who have the opportunity to achieve a college education.

EAOP is one of the University of California’s largest and most successful Student Academic Preparation and Educational Partnership (SAPEP) programs, currently serving more than 40,000 students at more than 200 K-12 public schools throughout California each year. EAOP helps students at underserved schools prepare for college and the work force, complete all UC and California State University (CSU) admissions requirements, and apply for college and financial aid. EAOP also guides families by showing them how to navigate complex college preparation, college application, and financial aid processes.

University studies consistently show that EAOP participants are better prepared for college than non-participants statewide, with higher completion rates of CSU/UC-required A-G coursework and SAT/ACT entrance exams needed for college-readiness. EAOP participants also outperform their peers in UC eligibility and college enrollment.

College Readiness: EAOP broadens the pool of educationally disadvantaged K-12 students who graduate prepared to enroll and succeed at CSU and UC, with

79% of EAOP 12th-grade participants completing A-G coursework, compared to 49% of all California public high schools seniors, and
67% of EAOP 12th-grade participants completing the SAT or ACT, compared to 60% of non-participants at the same California public high schools.

College Opportunity and Enrollment: EAOP also broadens the pool of educationally disadvantaged students gaining admission to and enrolling at California's public 2-year and 4-year colleges.

36% of EAOP 12th-grade participants applied to UC in fall 2018, with 62% of applicants accepted, and 56% of admittees enrolling. In comparison, 24% of all California public high school graduates applied to UC in fall 2018, with 59% of applicants accepted, and 54% of admittees enrolling.
63% of EAOP 12th-grade participants enrolled at a California public college in fall 2018, compared to 55% of all California public high school seniors.
